Aspen Highlands Maroon Bowl on Closing Day, 2009. Ed Armstrong Speed-Fly's Maroon Bowl. Speed-Flying is like paragliding, but the kite is much smaller and therefore the speed is much higher. You use skis to get enough speed for takeoff. Its a pretty radical and exciting sport only practiced by a few.
Maroon Bowl is on the backside of the Fantastic Highlands Bowl at Aspen Highlands Ski Resort. It is in the backcountry and has significant risks including a river to cross at the bottom, but the turns are sweet.

Inside a Galapagos Bait Ball of Black Stripped Salema Fish - 360 degree underwater panorama
On the inside of a 'bait ball' of salema fish off Isabella Island, Galapagos. This is 9 photos taken with a 15mm lens, stiched with PtGui and a lot of photoshop work post processing to try to have each fish complete. This experience is being completely engulfed and surrounded on all sides and above by millions of fish. It darkens the sky!

n one of the most detailed astronomical images ever produced, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured an unprecedented look at the Orion Nebula. This turbulent star formation region is one of astronomy's most dramatic and photogenic celestial objects. More than 3,000 stars of various sizes appear in this image. Some of them have never been seen in visible light. These stars reside in a dramatic dust-and-gas landscape of plateaus, mountains, and valleys that are reminiscent of the Grand Canyon. The Orion Nebula is a picture book of star formation, from the massive, young stars that are shaping

'The Green Flash at the last moment of the setting sun
The elusive 'Green Flash' is not really a flash but a moment right before the setting sun disappears when its color turns to green. The atmospheric conditions need to be just right (such as no clouds on the horizon) and it helps to have a beer or glass of wine in hand, but it is real, although most people that say they saw it have credibility issues proportionate to the number of beers they have already consumed.
This green flash occur off the coast of Martinique on June 26th, 2008.
Baldy Mountain on a very windy day, Snowmass, Colorado
A very very windy day on top of Baldy Mountain, at 13,300 feet. My friend Ed and I hiked up here so he could fly down on his speed kite, but it was far too windy, blowing at 50mph (it was calm when we left a couple hours before, and from 6000 feet lower...) I had to wedge the tripod into the peak rock pile to keep the gigapan unit from blowing away, then we went and hid from the wind under the snowbank. Taking the glove off momentarily to connect the Gigapan power and the thumb screw on the camera was painful. You cant see the aspect we skied down, it is from the top of the large mound
