Elkhorn coral is the fastest growing hard coral. It only lives in shallow water where its growth is aided by photosynthesis conducted by zooxanthelae, which is a single cell algea symbioticaly living within the coral polyps. Elkhorn coral is often broken in major storms, and the pieces establish new colonies.
